Looks like ubuntu released karmic today (as I guess they could not rename it 9.11).
I've been testing karmic for months, (which at times have been very painful - but if you join the beta ride, what else would it be), but in the last few weeks it looked like it was really coming together.
The only big regression was the synaptics touchpad resetting the 'tap' setting after suspend resume cycle.
However, there was a kernel update last week which completely broke suspend (it never really sleeps the machine), and attempts to report it via the apport tool result in a invalid message about the kernel not being a ubuntu one.. (which someone has reported)
I'd really suggest anyone requiring resume/suspend to work, to hold of for a little while until they sort out the remaining issues.

All is working for me...
I'm on a ThinkPad T61, and upgraded to Karmic the day before the official launch, using the RC. Suspend/resume work perfectly for me, and the touchpad settings remain the same when resuming (I actually turn mine off and use only the pointer, but the "off" setting is remembered).
Waiting...
I'm waiting for the server to be less overloaded and then i'll download the latest ubuntu release.

Yeah, suspend is broken for me as well -- Karmic on a x61s. I don't remember when it broke, but not just last week.

The PEAR issues, are not really PEAR issues but a zlib bug. We tried hard to get a fix into the release, but failed.
However, the bug will be fixed with one of the first updates available for Karmic.
Moving on...
I used and evangelized Ubuntu since at least Dapper, but lately... I have one client that requires Ubuntu, but other than them, I've been using almost anything but. I think Ubuntu just got to where GNOME was a few years ago and drank too much of their own KoolAid. They've had serious stability and reliability problems, and they haven't even been trying to compensate for that by staying on the leading edge of their major packages as much as they used to, or as much as other distros (*cough* Fedora, SUSE *cough*) do now. When a tech project turns into The One True Way To Save The World™, it's completely jumped the shark as a worthwhile technical project. I'm afraid that Ubuntu has reached that point, and show absolutely no qualms about jumping off the cliff. Too bad.
Possibly SDHC card
looks like I might have got the SDHC card bug - Suspend fails if you have a SDHC card inserted.. umount and remove it, I think suspend is working again.

Man, I was looking for a long time to know about the suspend problem in ubuntu 9.10 and indeed I removed the sdhc card and suspend works. Man that is so silly that it is genius.
